DRAGOON MOUNTAIN
CAMPING TRIP REPORT NOVEMBER 7-11, 2018 by John Smith
(Wagonmaster)
Eighteen rigs headed out to the Triangle T (TT) Ranch for
five days of adventure in the Dragoon Mountains (Texas Canyon) about 12 miles
east of Benson. Usually trips of this kind are organized for Monday thru
Friday, but the unusual character of the TT made the shift to Wednesday thru
Sunday more interesting and enabled our group to have dinner in the saloon on
Saturday and breakfast in their dining room on Sunday as an added attraction.
This trip has been run three times, the most recent being five years ago. The
owners and staff at TT were very accommodating and we filled almost all of
their campsites. They only have 17 full hookups (we used the 15 that were available)
and five electric only (we used three). They also made available to us their
"Town Hall" for our meals and game night.
With the exception of Saturday night when we had dinner in
the saloon, we had campfires every night, including one campfire program with a
cowboy singer strumming until we all got too cold to sit under the starlit sky
counting the slow moving satellites and space debris. Organized activities
included: tour of the Gammon's Gulch movie set, Bisbee Copper Mine tour and a
geocaching demo to the Dragoon Butterfield Stage stop/Dragoon Springs and
cemetery. Added to all that was a potluck dinner and a game night for those who
felt the evening campfire might be too cold.
But there are many things to do in Cochise County and smaller
groups went off to the Amerind museum (within walking distance). Some also hung
around Bisbee and others went to Douglas to visit the Gadsden Hotel. More went
to the Holy Trinity Monastery in Saint David's (there was a craft show there).
And others went to the Rex Allen Museum in Willcox.
The weather was great (but cold at night) and it certainly
appeared that all had a great time. This should be an often repeated outing.
